Do. Love. Walk.

Eleven Messiah youth from grades 6-10, four guests, and five adult leaders participated with nearly 300 others in Youth Encounter’s QUAKE and ZONE events at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott from Friday, January 29, to Sunday, January 31.

In years past, we have attended a similar event in Harrisburg for junior high school students only. The offering in Pittsburgh allowed us to take both junior high and senior high students, with different emphases for each age group.

Because of the distance, we left on Friday morning. The day was not devoid of education, however, as we got the opportunity to visit the Pittsburgh Zoo. The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly getting up-close and personal with penguins behind the scenes of the exhibit. We also were able to see the large fish tank from the holding area and hear how the Pittsburgh Zoo participates in conservation efforts.

Youth Encounter events feature large-group worship experiences with headline bands and engaging speakers from all over the country. We very much enjoyed the music of Daniel’s Window, a “modern worship band” from the Chicago area. Members of the band ate lunch with us on Saturday, interacted with our group during breakout sessions, and visited our senior-high Bible Time Saturday evening. Both their music and witness were very inspiring.

Dan Scharnhorst, our speaker, visited with our junior-high Bible Time Saturday evening, and during the large-group sessions, he both entertained with his unique brand of humor and stimulated our reflections on the theme verse for the weekend, Micah 6:8: “He has shown you what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

The event also featured Captive Free East Lakes, one of Youth Encounter’s National Ministry Teams. Captive Free East Coast, a similar ministry team, will be visiting Messiah on Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2. Messiah members participated in a variety show Saturday afternoon and received Holy Communion before the closing celebration on Sunday.

While the young people were at various activities, I enjoyed time to read, relax, and spend time with colleagues in the ministry – always an important and often-neglected pursuit. Thanks to the youth for their participation, attention and care for each other, to the adult leaders for their faithfulness, and to parents for helping provide the opportunity and entrusting their children to us for the weekend.

Taking Faith Home

Pastor Greg Priebbenow, of the Lutheran Church in Australia, writes Four Keys for Families each week and provides a great website for Youth and Family Ministry called “FormingFaith.com.”  Check it out for a Down Under perspective on family faith formation.
